Mad River Streamside Report
December

December 10, 2000
The Mad River looked a lot like the malls the day before Christmas!! The bridge at Rt. 36 was packed with cars, as were many of the bridges on the Mad River. The trout were hitting Tan Hare's Ear's, but they really needed to be small. Dead drifted seemed to be the best strategy today. Despite all of the snow and rain we seem to be getting the river level still seems down a bit. The temperature was in the lower 40's, but the water was still about 38 degrees. We spotted some monster browns, but the did not seem to want to cooperate. Perhaps they are making us wait until Christmas.

I spent an enjoyable afternoon with a new friend, Mike, from Columbus. You know Flyfisherman can be some of the warmest people on a cold day on the river. It's always nice to share river stories and and what the trout seem to be hitting on. Keep in mind, unlike work, your time on the river should be an enjoyable experience where you can take some time to relax and enjoy the company of good friends. I look forward to sharing the river with Mike in the future and continuing to meet new friends as we keep our lines tight.

The weather might be 50 degrees, but the water level is up and cloudy. All of that freezing rain and melting snow has the Mad River tough to fish. I would suggest you wait until the beginning of the week. This would be a good weekend to finish that Christmas shopping ( to keep you out of trouble with your spouse) or tie a few new flies.
