Mad River Streamside Report
May

May 31, 2001
The water level and clarity has returned to the Mad. Keep your fingers crossed and if we can avoid more rain everything should be perfect for the weekend. The sulphers are in full force and the trout are ready, willing, and able!

The Mad is completely washed out with all of the rain we got Saturday night. It will probably take a couple of days to be fishable. I would say it won't be until at least Tuesday. <

I floated the Mad Saturday with a good friend Mike who is starting a fly club (Three Rivers Fly Club) in Central Ohio. For those of you that are close to Columbus and are interested in joining this new club feel free to contact me and I'll put you in touch with Mike. We floated from just below Rt. 36 to the Eagle City Bridge.

We probably caught between 10-15 brown trout and Mad River Chubs during our float. Although Friday night saw a tremendous thunderstorm blow through the area Saturday turned out to be a glorious day on the river. We only saw a couple of other people fishing and only four canoers on the river all day.

There appeared to be a nice hatch of very small blue-winged olives and tan and olive Hare's Ears seemed to be the ticket for the day. We struggled at times in matching the hatch, but just as we picked the canoe up for the day we saw a monster (+20' plus) brown come out of the water for something!

Thanks Mike for a relaxing day on the river. I promise next time we will get that monster Brown!
