Through the cooperation of the Safari Club and Indianapolis Flycasters both rainbow and brown trout have been stocked near Brookville, Indiana on the White River. This project began in the Spring of 2001.
Approximately 2000 7-8 inch trout were stocked in the Spring. Surveys are being distributed around the area to monitor the effectiveness of this stocking project.
Brookville Update July 2, 2001
According to Tom Brandl Whitewater Lake is being drained which is resulting in higher than expected water flows during the summer months. Fishing has been good, both from personal expereince and reports.
The brown trout have spread along the entire stretch of the stream. There is some indication of growth. There are still some rainbows in the stream. People are releasing the browns so far, due to the small size. Tom Brandl does have some reports of 10-11 inch browns. 8 creel surveys were submitted in May. Over 74 browns were caught according to the surveys.
Brookville Update September 24, 2001
Creel surveys continue to come in and describe the trout fishing on the White River. The catch rate appears to be down as of right now. Tom Brandl attributes this to three reasons. First, there are fewer fish now than when the first stocking took place. Secondly, the trout appear to have become more selective. Lastly, the flow rates have been a problem.
Brookville Update October 22, 2001
Fall stocking will begin to take place in October. 2000 3-5 inch browns will be stocked with the hope that these browns will grow to 6-8 inches in the upcoming Spring. The local TU group hopes that the available scuds and caddis larve/nymphs will provide the needed nourishment over the winter.
The September Creel survey reports showed that catch rates increased from the summer. The local TU group believes this due to the water levels remaining at constant levels. Brown trout caught numbered 53.
Brookville Update April 1, 2002
I had four returned creel surveys for February and one for March. I was going to fish
Easter weekend, but the water was at the 5ft. level. People are catching
some trout. Both rainbows and browns are being caught. I would say an
average day is one or two trout for 2-4 hours of fishing. There haven't
been any returns that shows the progress of the brown trout stocking in
October. Hopefully, we will see some in the next few weeks. I have seen
some hatches comeing off, but no trout rising to them. The special
regulations should be submitted by the end of this month.
